Made possible by Dr. Bernard Robben and Michael Lund as part of the module "3D Modeling and Design at the FabLab - From Origami to Algorithmic Folding" at the University of Bremen and the University of the Arts Bremen.
Some Words from Dr. Bernard Robben:
Folding is everywhere. It seems to involve all scales, from the largest - as with inorganic geological folding processes - to the smallest - as with the DNA molecules. In human culture folding plays an essential role in techniques of textile manufacturing, such as weaving, knotting and braiding.
Examining the techniques of writing, papyrus was one of the ancient media - a rolled surface. Compared with papyrus, paper is a highly foldable material that is used artistically in origami folding. With the change of material from papyrus to paper, text production also changed. The written line has an orientation in space that changes when the page is turned, rotated, bent or folded. Nowadays, information is stored in a revolutionary new way with techniques of artificial intelligence.
In the course “3D Modeling and Design at the FabLab”, students from the University of Bremen and the University of the Arts Bremen explored manifold relationships between folding and artificial intelligence. They created installations that demonstrate this connection in very different ways, and they now are exhibiting their results at the FabLab in Postamt 5.
